Escola Popluar
In den vergangenen fünf Jahren haben wir den Cluberê und auch die Kindertagesstätte renoviert. Nun ist die dritte soziale Einrichtung von Emaús Novos Alagados an der Reihe: die Escola Popular. Das Gebäude stammt aus den 1980er Jahren und erfüllt die Vorschriften der Regierung nicht mehr. Daher kann derzeit nur ein Klassenraum für den Unterricht genutzt werden. Die Schule wird dank der Stiftung HUBER HELPS bis Mitte 2026 vollständig renoviert, um dann wieder ihre ursprüngliche Kapazität für insgesamt 120 Schüler zu erreichen.
After the renovations of the Cluberê and the daycare center, the third social project of Emaús Novos Alagados is now next in line: the Escola Popular. The building dates back to the 1980s and no longer meets government regulations. As a result, only one classroom can currently be used for teaching. The school is scheduled to be fully renovated by mid-2026, so it can once again accommodate its original capacity of 120 students.
Das Recht auf Bildung ist in der Allgemeinen Erklärung der Menschenrechte der Vereinten Nationen festgeschrieben und eine der wichtigsten Voraussetzungen für die persönliche und auch gesellschaftliche Entwicklung eines Landes. Zwar gibt es eine gesetzliche Schulpflicht in Brasilien, aber gerade in den Favelas kommt es nicht selten vor, dass sehr arme Familien ihre Kinder nicht in die Schule schicken, sondern stattdessen arbeiten lassen, um das Familieneinkommen aufzubessern.
The right to education is enshrined in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights and is one of the most important prerequisites for personal as well as societal development in a country. Although there is a compulsory schooling law in Brazil, it is not uncommon, especially in the favelas, for very poor families not to send their children to school, but instead to let them work to supplement the family income.
Die Escola Popular war für 30 Jahre eine der wichtigsten Schulen in Novos Alagados, einer Favela mit mehr als 20.000 Bewohnern. Sie war eine sogenannte Escola Comunitária, eine staatlich anerkannte Schule, die aber keine öffentlichen Mittel für den Schulbetrieb erhält. Die Finanzmittel mussten über sogenannte convênios (Vereinbarungen) bei Firmen und anderen privaten oder staatlichen Organisationen einwerben. Bis 2010 hat die Stadt Salvador die Escola Popular im Wesentlichen finanziert. Durch einen Korruptionsskandal, in den auch die Präfektur verwickelt war, wurden die Zahlungen von heute auf morgen eingestellt.
For 30 years, Escola Popular was one of the most important schools in Novos Alagados, a favela with more than 20,000 residents. It was a so-called Escola Comunitária, a state-recognized school that, however, did not receive public funds for running the school. The financial resources had to be raised through so-called convênios (agreements) with companies and other private or state organizations. Until 2010, the city of Salvador essentially funded Escola Popular. Due to a corruption scandal that also involved the city administration, the payments were suddenly stopped overnight.

In den letzten 10 Jahren standen vor allem bauliche Mängel einer Wiederinbetriebnahme im Wege, denn auch eine Escola Comunitária muss vom Staat genehmigt werden. Im August 2025 haben wir einen Antrag zur Finanzierung der Renovierungskosten bei der amerikanischen Firma J.M. Huber Corporation gestellt. Diese spendet jedes Jahr 1% ihres Nettogewinns für soziale Projekte. Im Dezember kam dann die freudige Nachricht, dass die kompletten Renovierungskosten in Höhe von 95.000 US-Dollar von Huber übernommen werden. Ein echter Meilenstein für die Menschen, die sich in Novos Alagados seit Jahrzehnten engagieren und für mehr und bessere Bildung eintreten.
In the last 10 years, structural deficiencies have mainly stood in the way of reopening, because even a community school must be approved by the state. In August 2025, we submitted an application for funding the renovation costs to the American company J.M. Huber Corporation. Every year, they donate 1% of their net profits to social projects. In December, the joyful news arrived that Huber would cover the entire renovation costs amounting to 95,000 US dollars. A real milestone for the people who have been committed to Novos Alagados for decades and advocating for more and better education.
Die Escola Popular wird im Ganztagsbetrieb laufen und hat Platz für 120 Schülerinnen und Schülern. Bei der Auswahl der Kinder werden vor allem arme Familien berücksichtigt. Mittags wird es eine Schulmahlzeit geben - eine weitere Entlastung für viele Familien, die auch heute noch Hunger leiden.

The Escola Popular will operate full-time and has a capacity for 120 students. When selecting the children, priority will be given to poor families. There will be a school meal at noon – another relief for many families who still suffer from hunger today.
